Chapter 11

Well, she'd utterly ruined their day in the snow, Revé thought when she hauled the picnic basket into Carmen’s kitchen to unload the leftovers and put things away.

Plopping the remains of lunch all over the counter, she figured she had completely blown any sort of friendship with Logan for the next two weeks. She shouldn't have said a word, just tossed off his questions and avoided him from now on.

The house was already feeling lonely and too quiet. She missed Carmen. And she missed her family, picturing them landing in New Delhi and packing themselves into her grandmother’s tiny car to zoom along the crowded streets up to her house on the hill. Everybody was talking a mile a minute and laughing and catching up.

Had she been foolish not going with her parents to India? That's probably where she belonged, not here, despite Taos' beauty and the winter wonderland of the mountains.

She desperately wanted a long, hot soak in the tub to thaw her limbs and toes, but first she called Carmen, punching the buttons on her phone.

“Hey, Carmen, did you make it to Colorado okay? How’s your father?”

"He just got out of surgery, and the doctors said it went well. Mom and I haven't seen him yet because he's in Recovery and not awake. I'll call you after I know more, okay?"

Carmen sounded distracted, and Revé could hear voices in the background at the hospital.

“I understand, I don’t want to take you away from your mom. She needs you.”

“I promise to call you later. Thanks for checking in. I miss you already.”

“Me, too,” Revé whispered. “Hang in there and give my love to your parents—and some huge thanks for letting me stay here, too!”

She clicked off just as the back door to the outside patio opened. It was Logan hauling the Christmas tree inside. Revé had tried so hard to put him out of her mind, she was startled at the sight of him. Of course, he’d bring in the tree for her!

“Hey, Revé, where do you want it?” he called out.

She hurried out from the kitchen and surveyed the great room with its vast ceilings. "My enormous pine tree suddenly shrunk in half!"

"That always happens when you get a live tree home. It either doubles in size if you have a small place like I do—or shrinks when there are twenty-foot-tall ceilings like the Hurley house."

“How about next to the fireplace—if we just move this armchair closer to the sofa arrangement?”

Logan nodded and set the tree in place. He’d already created a base for the trunk so it wouldn’t topple over—when, Revé wasn’t sure, but the man was fast. He’d probably done it in the garage while she’d been in the kitchen on the phone.

He slowly spun the tree in place. “Which side looks best?”

“Right there,” she suddenly said, pointing. “This side facing us is fuller, and the emptier space can go against the wall.”

Logan set the tree, checked the stand, and stepped back. “I agree. It’s perfect.
